The owners of “Spirit of Bequia,” Matthew and Jay, are passionate about Bequia, its cultures and inhabitants. Both have strong beliefs in supporting the educational, social, and cultural development of Bequia through their chartering business.
As such, a not for profit business has been incorporated, and 10% of charter fees are contributed to this business, whose board of directors, all of them local business persons, teachers, or charity organizers, decide on where the money be invested to further benefit Bequia life.
Examples of projects that are in need in further investment are the sports pavillion's bathroom facilities. Sport is paramount to the island and improving the central sports ground helps the whole of the island.
Education too. We are proud to be providing books that may have else been destroyed to the high school, and to the school for disadvantaged children.
We are all very excited about this funding initiative, and hope that other private business too will see the benefit of giving a little bit back into the community.
Environmentally, Bequia is fascinating. A dry island, meaning that it has no rivers, so drinking water and water for washing and cooking, must all be collected during the rainy season and stored for later use.
Therefore the safe and responsible disposal of yacht refuge is key to “Spirit of Bequia” as too is any type of recycling we can do.
One of the most exhilarating experiences is showering on the foredeck in the rain!!! You may never have the opportunity again in your life to do so. The water's free, and the memory – priceless! |
